Florida Hops Consortium Making Progress

Saturday was harvest day for the Florida Hops Consortium. In total, four pounds of hops were picked of Neo1, Columbus and Chinook hops.

Described as a “collaborative group of scientists, producers, horticulturists, and premium craft brewers developing high quality locally-grown Florida hops,” the Consortium is looking to increase the production of hops in the Sunshine State. Since Florida is not the ideal place to grow this cooler climate vine, the group has some challenges to overcome to make hop growing a large scale reality in Florida.

The idea is to allow brewers in the state to utilize a sort of ‘terroir’ which would be especially useful when crafting certain styles like fresh-hop beers. Instead of getting a package dry-iced overnight from the Pacific Northwest, brewers might some day get hops from just a few hundred miles away.

Until then, we look forward to the developments as they come!

Huge THANKS goes out to @run.tested.brews for lending a few hours to help us hand pick 4 lbs of beautiful hop cones from our Experimental Hop Garden!! 🍻🍻 Together we harvested Neo1, Columbus and Chinook hops. We also dropped off the freshest hops in Florida to @redlightredlight! Keep ready to grab those rare Florida Hop beers! 🤓❤🌱🍻 Update: So this week, out of our Experimental Hop Garden, we have harvested a total wet weight of 10 lbs from various plants including Southern Brewer, Columbus, Chinook, Neo1, Zeus, and Newport. We still have to harvest our Willow Creek and Canadian Redvine varieties including more Chinook, Columbus, and Neo1 plants. Stay tuned.
